Man Utd fans agree with Erik ten Hag about Mason Greenwood during Getafe loan

Man Utd were 'hours' away from losing transfer target to Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp chat

Manchester United fans are generally supportive of Mason Greenwood’s return to Old Trafford, a poll by Express Sport has found. The forward was sent on loan to Getafe towards the end of the summer window after the Red Devils decided that his career should be kickstarted away from the club.

United finally concluded a lengthy six-month investigation into Greenwood’s conduct in August. It came after the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued its own probe into allegations of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behaviour.

Reports suggested that United were initially in favour of reintegrating Greenwood under Erik ten Hag, but strong backlash prompted them into a U-turn. It was decided that the 22-year-old should spend his career away from Old Trafford.

The player was offered to several clubs for either a loan or a permanent transfer. It was ultimately La Liga side Getafe who took up the opportunity to sign the one-cap England international on a temporary deal.

Greenwood has already made three appearances for his new club, including his first start in their 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday. However, a large portion of Red Devils supporters want to see the academy graduate back at Old Trafford.

In a poll of 9, 437 Express Sport readers, 58 per cent believe Greenwood should play for his parent club again. According to reports, that is in line with the stance of head coach Ten Hag.

The Manchester Evening News reported in the summer that while Ten Hag was in favour of loaning Greenwood, he did not want the club to sell him. In an interview with The Times, the Dutchman explained that Greenwood “showed in the past that he is capable of doing that [scoring goals]”.

Greenwood has played three times for Getafe but has so far failed to find the net in La Liga. He will hope to start again against Villarreal on Saturday.

Meanwhile, United are finally finding form under Ten Hag this season, having endured a horrible start to the 2023-24 campaign. The Red Devils lost against Tottenham, Arsenal, Brighton and Bayern Munich across a horrible run, but have now won their last two matches.

Victories over Burnley in the Premier League and Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup have given United some momentum. Ten Hag will hope that several key players returning from injury will help his side climb the top-flight table.
