‘I was in iconic Phil Brown team talk – Hull boss embarrassed himself’

Hull City legend Dean Windass has opened up about the infamous public team talk he experienced when 4-0 down to Manchester City in 2008.

The club were playing in the Premier League for the first time ever and had an impressive start to the season, scoring victories over Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham. However, a 4-1 drubbing at home to Sunderland was soon followed by a trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Man City who raced to a 4-0 score-line after just 36 minutes.

Hull manager Phil Brown was so disgusted with his side's performance that he kept them on the pitch to deliver his half-time team talk rather than in the changing room. The humiliation of it all did little to change the result as the game ended 5-1.

Windass has since opened up about the incident and said he thinks Brown "embarrassed himself" and nobody in the team spoke about it after it happened. "The biggest problem was that we couldn't really hear him – the crowd were just too loud," the Hull native explained. "I don't think he really made mugs out of us; I just think he embarrassed himself more than anything else, because we had quite a few experienced players in the team.

"No one really spoke about it after, and the fact was that we had 24 points at the time so we had started the season fantastically. He had given us Christmas Day off, though, and I think he regretted that. He blamed himself for that and I think he took it out on us."

Following the game, Brown stood by his actions and said: "It was the right thing to do". He continued: "There is no doubt about it. I have got no regrets about it whatsoever.

"If it bruised one or two egos then so be it, although it wasn't intended to be that way. The priority for me is to get a second year in the Premier League. That has not changed. For us to do that we have got to win five games from 19."

Despite the damaging loss which became part of a six-game losing streak, the club managed to survive even with winning just one of their last 22 games as they finished in 17th place, just one point above Newcastle who were relegated to the Championship. The club stayed just one more season in the Premier League before they were relegated back to the Championship.
