Paul Scholes has claimed Man United should have paid ‘whatever it would have cost’ to sign Harry Kane ahead of Bayern Munich.

The former Man United midfielder claimed ahead of their Champions League group stage tie against the German champions that the club should have focused their efforts on luring Kane to Old Trafford.

Kane ultimately joined Bayern in a £100m move from Tottenham in the summer, with the Red Devils instead signing Rasmus Hojlund for £72m.

‘Without a shadow of a doubt’ Scholes said on TNT Sports, when asked whether Man United should have broken the bank to sign Kane.

‘They have been crying out for a centre forward. Whatever it would have cost, they should have got him.

‘You are buying 25 to 30 goals a season.

‘The young lad Hojlund is one for the future but does not have a great goalscoring record as yet. He may do that in the future.

‘Kane coming into this team, you are thinking 25-30 goals.

‘If you are thinking about the owners and money, if you had the budget to buy just one player or three, I would have bought Harry Kane all day long.

‘He would have brought so much to this team.’

Mail Sport revealed this week that Kane would have waited until next summer to sign for Man United if the deal was guaranteed to go ahead.

The 30-year-old had set his heart on a move to Old Trafford and would even have seen out the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs, but he wasn’t sure if United could keep the door open for him.

Kane was manager Erik ten Hag’s top target but United couldn’t afford him and faced a battle to convince Spurs chief Daniel Levy to let the striker join a Premier League rival.

As soon as United switched their sights to a younger and cheaper option in Hojlund, Kane sealed his move to Bayern.

Former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand insisted the club should have pursued a deal for Kane, with the pundit suggesting the England captain’s influence and goals would have been crucial to Ten Hag’s side.

‘You have to go after someone like that, who guarantees you goals,’ Ferdinand said.

‘You add 30 goals and his influence in games, his presence and character to the dressing room.

‘He is a leader, everything you want in terms of changing how things are going, he would bring to you. For whatever reason Man United didn’t do that and Bayern have capitalised.’
