Cricket World Cup star furious after being given out without facing a ball

Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews was furious after being sensationally timed out in a Cricket World Cup first. Batters are supposed to be ready to face a ball within two minutes, but Mathews was late to his crease after supposedly bringing the wrong helmet.

The 35-year-old became the first international cricketer to be timed out in an embarrassing moment. He replaced the fallen Sadeera Samarawickrama during the 25th over of Sri Lankan’s innings against Bangladesh.

However, Mathews appeared to have issues with the strapping on his helmet. He was initially seen laughing about his situation before realising he had landed himself in hot water.

Under the Cricket World Cup’s laws, new batters should be ready to face their first ball within two minutes of emerging. But Mathews was seen still fiddling with the strapping on his helmet.

He prompted a lack of patience from the umpires, who ultimately took umbrage with the time that was wasted. Mathews was given out by the umpire without facing a ball.

The former Sri Lanka captain was furious when he realised he had been timed out. He remonstrated with the officials and argued his case, insisting that the strapping on his helmet was causing him genuine issues.

Mathews shook his head before finally making his way off the field. In apparent disbelief over the situation, he had his left hand on his head as he made his way back to the stands.
