Spanish FA chief threatened with punishment as World Cup hero Hermoso speaks out

Women’s World Cup: England’s journey

Spain star Jenni Hermoso has announced that she will pursue action against Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales after he kissed her on the lips at the Women’s World Cup final. The incident caused uproar, with the player herself openly speaking about how uncomfortable a moment it was for her.

Following their 1-0 win over England’s Lionesses in the final, the Spain team were full of excitement as they collected their winner’s medals. However, the occasion took a bizarre turn when Hermoso began shaking the hands of the chiefs present in Australia.

Rubiales congratulated Hermoso before grabbing the forward by her head and kissing her on the lips. The president has since apologised for his actions. The incident was downplayed and statements were released to claim that all is forgiven and all parties have moved on.

However, that does not appear to be the case. Hermoso has now announced that she will be taking action against Rubiales. She wrote: “My FUTPRO union, in coordination with my TMJ agency, are taking charge of defending my interests and being the interlocutors on this matter.”

FUTPRO, who are a union for female footballers, expanded on the statement and wrote: “From our association, we ask the Royal Spanish Football Federation to implement the necessary protocols, ensure the rights of our players are upheld and adopt exemplary measures. It is essential that our team is represented by figures who project their values of equality and respect in all areas.

“It is necessary to continue advancing in the fight for equality, a fight that our players have led with determination, leading us to the position that we find ourselves in today. We also call on the National Sports Council [CSD] so that, within its powers, it actively supports and promotes prevention and intervention in the face of sexual harassment or abuse, machismo and sexism.

“From the union, we are working so that acts like the ones we have seen never go unpunished, they are sanctioned and the pertinent measures are adopted to protect the football players from actions that we believe are unacceptable.”

It remains to be seen how Rubiales react to the news of further action, with many calling for the 46-year-old to step down from his position as head of the RFEF. The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has also spoken out on the matter by criticising Rubiales and claiming that his apology did not meet the mark.
