Man Utd figures ‘want Qatari takeover’ but do not know what Glazers will do next

Football Digest: Man Utd with work to do after sluggish start

Some senior Manchester United figures reportedly ‘support’ a Qatari takeover of the Premier League club. Staff would supposedly welcome a takeover as soon as possible amid an impasse that has caused concern inside and outside Old Trafford.

Bidders to buy United are apparently unclear over which direction the Glazers will take. The current owners have not yet decided on a preferred bidder.

That has left British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani in the dark. But neither know if there will even be a takeover.

It is claimed that both bidders’ proposals remain on the table. But neither have heard from those overseeing the process for some time.

According to Sky Sports, the silence from the Glazers has left senior football figures at United unclear over what is happening next. Some are claimed to want a takeover as soon as possible, and are supportive of a controversial purchase by the Qatari-led party.

Figures within the club supposedly ‘support’ the reported £5bn offer by Sheikh Jassim. The report adds that the offer is still active but there is concern that the Glazers do not want to sell.

Sheikh Jassim made his fifth and final bid to buy United on June 7. His offer is for 100 per-cent of the club and, crucially for many fans, debt-free. Premature reports from Qatar suggested that his proposal had been selected as the Glazer family’s preferred option.

But the reality is that nobody from the bidding parties has supposedly heard from the controversial current owners for some time. There is concern that the Glazers might choose not to sell the club after a lengthy process that will enter a 10th month in September.

The exercise has added to the chaotic nature of United’s summer, and perhaps has interfered with the transfer dealings the Old Trafford outfit have completed. Erik ten Hag went into the summer unclear on who would be in control of the club come the start of the Premier League season.

United have made four signings – Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Jonny Evans – but have endured a poor first two games in 2023-24. A below-par performance dragged Ten Hag’s side past Wolves in their first game, before they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham.
