Predicted Tottenham XI as Ange Postecoglou faces two dilemmas vs Burnley

Ange Postecoglou defends decision to make changes as Tottenham exit Carabao Cup

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has two dilemmas ahead of the Premier League clash against Burnley on Saturday. A successful start to the top-flight season has seen Postecoglou’s side take seven points from their opening three games.

And ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Express Sport has taken a look at how Spurs could line up at Turf Moor.

Goalkeeper: Guglielmo Vicario

Guglielmo Vicario has enjoyed a positive start to life at Spurs. Hugo Lloris – who remains at the club but could leave – left big shoes to fill for the Italian by stepping aside as the No 1.

But Vicario has been excellent, particularly with his composure in possession. Spurs hardly miss Lloris, who was well past his best last season and was blamed for several poor errors.

Defenders: Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Destiny Udogie

The first of Postecoglou’s problems comes at right-back. Emerson Royal played well in the opening weekend win over Brentford, scoring Spurs’ equaliser just before half-time.

Postecoglou appears to have favoured Pedro Porro since. Emerson’s below-par display in the EFL Cup defeat at Fulham in midweek might shift the decision in favour of Porro – but both right-backs have their strengths and weaknesses.

Elsewhere across the back line, Cristian Romero will continue to partner the impressive Micky van de Ven. Destiny Udogie will keep out Ben Davies.

Midfielders: Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, James Maddison

Postecoglou changed his entire midfield trio at Fulham and the move backfired massively. That performance is likely to have prompted the rumoured pursuit of Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in a bid to add depth to Spurs’ midfield.

The Australian will surely revert to the midfield that defeated Man Utd and Bournemouth. Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have been excellent as a pairing. James Maddison continues to shine since his big-money switch from Leicester.

Attackers: Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son Heung-min

Richarlison’s place in Spurs’ starting 11 also hangs by a thread, with the Brazilian having failed to score a Premier League goal this term. He struck the equaliser in the 1-1 EFL Cup draw with Fulham, only for the North Londoners to exit on penalties.

Postecoglou has the option of benching Richarlison and moving Son Heung-min into a central role. But the Spurs head coach will likely pick the same team that beat Bournemouth.
