Man Utd change plans ‘due to Mason Greenwood’ as 3 deadline-day transfers eyed

Football Digest: Man Utd to be active ahead of transfer deadline

Manchester United have reportedly altered their transfer plans for the final few days of the window as a result of Mason Greenwood and the decision not to reintegrate him back into the squad. The 21-year-old has not played for the Red Devils since January 2022, though after an internal investigation, the club decided against bringing him back this season to compete under Erik ten Hag.

The final call was confirmed on August 16, deep into the summer as United’s transfer plans were well underway – having already signed Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. The Athletic have claimed that plans were in motion to bring Greenwood back to the first team before fierce backlash from supporters, with the club subsequently announcing that Greenwood would depart from Old Trafford with just over two weeks remaining of the window.

Greenwood not playing a role at United this season appears to have altered the club’s late transfer plans, as the Daily Mail have claimed that now the club chiefs are looking to sign a forward on loan to replace the one-cap England man before the window slams shut on Friday.

Signing another forward marks a significant change from their previous reported plan of attack, with Ten Hag and co keen to land a midfielder and emergency left-back on deadline day. The club have been hampered by Financial Fair Play constraints and have now been forced to fork out for another forward, with no guarantee that another club will pay for Greenwood before Friday’s deadline.

There have been plenty of enquiries for Greenwood, who has attracted interest from clubs in Italy and Turkey – with Besiktas the latest team to be linked. United will now focus on making three signings rather than two ahead of the deadline with a striker, a defensive central midfielder and a left-back needed.

Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat appears to be the number one target for the latter position, though the Serie A side have already turned down United’s opening offer to loan the Moroccan as they hope to sell him permanently, according to Di Marzio.
