Man Utd and Erik ten Hag being left red-faced by £15m transfer decision

Erik ten Hag’s decision to sell Anthony Elanga to Nottingham Forest for £15million may come back to haunt him if the 21-year-old continues his fine run of form. While Antony and Sancho continue to toil, Elanga is firing on all cylinders and was outstanding last weekend against Chelsea.

The Swede opened his account with the Super Reds in emphatic fashion as he tucked away a through ball from Taiwo Awoniyi in the 48th minute. It would end up being enough to secure Forest all three points after a wasteful display in front of goal from the home side.

For a time it looked as though Elanaga would be the next big thing at Old Trafford after picking up the prestigious Jimmy Murphy
Young Player of the Year award for the 2019/2020 season. However, despite a decent run in the first team, he never caught the eye of his managers at United.

Luckily for him, Nottingham boss Steve Cooper saw something in him and forked out eight figures to bring him to the City Ground. Speaking about Elanga’s potential after the United game, Cooper said: “He’s a good finisher, Anthony. I get asked about him quite a lot because for a young player, he’s fairly high-profile and has come from United.

“We want players like that in the squad who are young and hungry, and who we know we can grow. He is already a really good player, but he will become a very important player for us. That’s just a process. Days like this will help him as well.

“What we’ve noticed about him in training is that he’s a really competent finisher. Taiwo has been scoring regularly for us, but you need other attacking players who look like they can score a goal as well. I really believe Anthony has that.”

Elanga never found his scoring boots at Old Trafford, only managing four goals from 55 appearances but has had a better run for Sweden as of late with two goals from three this year alone. A fresh start appears to have done him some good.

The youngster is playing with a real air of confidence about him and supporters will be hoping he can realise his potential in Nottingham’s red. “I don’t know if you could zoom in on me in the 95th minute but I was completely shattered,” said Elanga. “Because I worked for the team and the team worked together and we defended really well and we broke them.”
