Liverpool fans rage as bookings for asking for yellows ‘only given against us’

Liverpool fans are furious after clocking that referee Simon Hooper failed to send off Tottenham's Destiny Udogie off for waving an imaginary card after being fouled by Diogo Jota.

In fairness, the Reds had plenty to complain about as they let slip their undefeated start to the season in agonising fashion. Spurs took all three points thanks to a 96th minute Joel Matip own goal, but the afternoon was marred in controversy after Liverpool will hammered with two debatable red card decisions and a not-so-debatable VAR gaffe which wrongly-ruled out a Luis Diaz goal.

On top of all that, Tottenham were lucky not to go down to 10 men themselves after Udogie appeared to fall foul of the new ban on card-gesturing. Since the start of the season, referees have been booking players who ask for their opponents to get carded following a foul, but Udogie's misdemeanour, which happened when he was already on a yellow card, went unpunished.

Liverpool fans were understandably outraged by it. Especially since Alexis Mac Allister was penalised for waving an imaginary card during his side's opening day draw with Chelsea in August.

One supporter fumed on X (formerly Twitter): "Alexis Mac Allister does a card gesture against Chelsea after being fouled and gets a yellow card. We were told that the rules have changed this season regarding card gestures by players. Destiny Udogie does the same gesture while being on a yellow card. Jota gets booked."

"So the rule only applies when Liverpool players do it I see," wrote another. A third added: "Ridiculously inconsistent refereeing. Why is it so hard to just get things like this right?"

A fourth raged: "Simon Hooper should never be allowed to ref a Liverpool game again. Clearly hates us. How else do you explain him not giving Udogie a second yellow? He didn't want to send him off it's as simple as that."

To make matter worse, Jota was later sent off after picking up a couple of yellow cards for two separate fouls on Udogie. His dismissal brought Liverpool down to nine men following Curtis Jones' straight red for an ugly studs-up challenge on Yves Bissouma.

Son Heung-min had broken the deadlock in the first-half, just a few minutes after Luis Diaz's goal was wrongly ruled out for offside, and mistakenly not corrected by a VAR check. Cody Gakpo brought Liverpool level just before the break before Matip's injury-time own goal sealed a dramatic and controversy-laden win for Spurs.
