Gary Neville ‘thought he was going to die in hospital’ after drink was spiked
Gary Neville says he thought he was going to die after getting his drink spiked on a Christmas night out.
The Manchester United legend famously wasn't much of a boozer in his younger days, but getting catered off to hospital after couple of beers was odd even for a lightweight like him. On the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the panel were discussing funny stories from festive dos when Neville remembered a particularly frightening one from his teenaged years.
"I ended up in hospital one Christmas do," the former full back told Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott. "I thought I was going to die."

"Someone spiked my drink. I don't know what it was with," Neville added, to which Keane jokingly replied: "Alcohol."
Continuing, Neville said: "I never used to drink that much, and I didn't drink that much [that night]. I swear I was spiked. And you didn't have mobile phones back then. I was 18."

The fact that Neville has never been a big drinker is no surprise given that he went to great lengths to avoid nights in the pub as a youngster. Earlier this month, the 48-year-old claimed he was so dedicated to becoming a top footballer that he completely cut his high school mates out of his life after graduation.
"When I left school at 16, I never spoke to my friends from school ever again," he told his podcast colleagues. "I look back at it now and it was terrible. I just thought that if I don’t put everything into football, then I’d regret it."
Neville ended up playing for United over 600 times, winning 20 trophies including eight Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues. As much as it was d**k move, cutting his mates off was probably worth it.
