Cristiano Ronaldo dig at Man Utd owners the Glazers backed up by Charlie Savage

Mason Mount slammed by former Man Utd star after poor start – 'Nowhere to be seen'

On his way out of Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo left with a parting shot at the unpopular owners the Glazers by criticising the facilities at the club. Many supporters have been critical of the Glazer family for their lack of investment, though those days could soon be behind the Red Devils as Sheikh Jassim of Qatar and Sir Jim Ratcliffe remain in talks to purchase the club.

Ronaldo’s days at United were numbered after a falling out with boss Erik ten Hag, which led to him speaking with broadcaster Piers Morgan in a bombshell interview that ultimately ended with the club tearing up his contract.

While many fans took offence to the majority of Ronaldo’s claims, one aspect they resonated with was his complaints over the lack of investment behind the scenes as Old Trafford and that the club’s training ground complex Carrington needed significant improvements.

“The progress was zero,” Ronaldo said last year. “Since Sir Alex left, I saw no evolution in the club. Nothing had changed. He (Ferguson) knows better than anybody that the club is not on the path they deserve to be. He knows. Everyone knows. The people who don’t see that… it’s because they don’t want to see. They are blind.”

It is a claim that few have refuted, but has since been backed up by Charlie Savage – who left United in the summer for League One side Reading. Savage, the son of former United and Wales midfielder Robbie Savage, insisted that the facilities in the third division were every bit as good as what he was used to at United during his first interview as a Reading player in the summer.

“Reading’s training ground- I heard it was good but I didn’t realise it was this good,” Savage told Reading’s official YouTube channel. “Honestly, I’d say it’s on par with United at the minute.”

For a club the size of United to be on par with the likes of Reading will cause alarm, as Ronaldo’s words appear to have rung true. Ronaldo, Savage and club icon Gary Neville all seem to be on the same page after the former United right-back also lamented the investment from the current owners.

“In 20 years, Manchester United have not invested in the stadium, and they’ve not invested in the training ground that much,” Neville previously said. “It’s a club that’s really struggling and I’ve said in the last couple of years that the only thing I think can change it now is the ownership. There is an embedded rot at the club.

“They’ve still not dealt with the football operation; they’ve still not dealt with the player and recruitment department; they’ve still not dealt with the stadium which is rusting and needs massive money spent on it. Manchester United need a billion pounds in this next two-three years to either rebuild or renovate that stadium.”
