Chelsea ‘still need four players’ as Todd Boehly spending nears £1billIion mark
Jamie Carragher has claimed Chelsea need as many as four new additions to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League title. The Sky Sports pundit still thinks Mauricio Pochettino has some way to go before his squad are in the mix for the biggest prizes.
That’s despite the fact Todd Boehly has spent nearly £1billion since purchasing Chelsea in 2022 over the course of three transfer windows.
Chelsea have splashed over £300m on incomings this summer but they have only collected one point from their opening two Premier League matches.
Carragher thinks there are still several key areas of the squad that need to be improved – despite signs of positivity under Pochettino.
He told Sky Sports: “Even though I’ve been really impressed with them in the first two games, if you asked me how many players they need to challenge Manchester City – I’m not talking about winning the league – I still think they need a new goalkeeper even though they’ve just signed Robert Sanchez.

“I think they probably still need another top centre-half because Thiago Silva is 38.
“I don’t think there’s a real out-and-out goalscorer. Your goalscorer doesn’t have to be your centre-forward, Liverpool’s is Mohamed Salah who plays on the right wing so it’s not a dig at Nicolas Jackson.
“He’s only just come into the club and I’ve been impressed with him.
“But you think of those really important decisions, it still feels like four players, four top players, would need to go into that team just to challenge Manchester City and that doesn’t feel right when you consider the amount of money that they’ve spent.”

Chelsea are still in the market for attacking reinforcements, most notably a creative attacker after recently missing out on Micheal Olise.
The Frenchman snubbed the chance to move to Stamford Bridge to sign a new contract at Crystal Palace but other targets are now on their radar.
The arrival of another new goalkeeper is also imminent with Dorde Petrovic set to join from New England Revolution.
But the elephant in the room for Pochettino is that he is still without a top-class No.9 to get Chelsea the goals they need.
Jackson has shown signs of huge promise in pre-season and his first two top-flight outings but he is still yet to find the target in the Premier League.
Chelsea have now invested heavily in their defence and midfield and now they need to make some further adjustments to their attack.
The Blues are still trying to find a buyer for Romelu Lukaku and that could bolster their spending power when it comes to signing a striker.
Boehly and Co are expected to be active in the market right up until the September 1 transfer deadline.
