Ben Davies insists Spurs aren’t panicking just yet despite two defeats in a row

Ben Davies is adamant nobody inside Tottenham is hitting the panic button despite ‘insane pressure’ on the outside.

Two successive defeats prevented Ange Postecoglou’s previously-unbeaten troops going top before the international break – and conjured up memories of a similar decline this time last year under Antonio Conte. But Welsh defender Davies, back in favour due to injuries and suspensions in defence, has dismissed the idea there is any fear or sense of deja vu around the Spurs camp.

Quite the reverse, as the Wales international emphasised on the eve of today’s home clash against fellow top-four contenders Aston Villa. Defiant Davies declared: “When you’re doing well, the first sign of any sort of wobble, people get excited by that. They want to see how you react.

“We’ve had two results that haven’t gone the way we wanted, but there’s no time for panic. There’s still a load of games left and it’s up to us to put it right. We’re confident we can do that in this group. The manager has our back. We’ve got into a mindset that it’s game by game – and we’ll look at the table with four or five left to see where we are.

“This game comes with insane amounts of pressure. You’ve seen some players find it incredibly difficult. Let’s be honest, we’re in a Premier League pressure-cooker – with tough times always being around the corner.

“Every action you do is judged by millions around the world. But if we don’t get distracted by things going on outside, by the narrative, by the question marks over style of play or personnel, if we stick together as a group, hopefully we’ll be there or thereabouts.”

Keeping things in perspective could be imperative with a trip to champions Manchester City following Villa’s visit. Which is where a different managerial voice with a simple-yet-unique message is proving a real help, according to Davies.

That is not a criticism of Conte – Davies is full of compliments for the sacked Italian – more a tip of the hat to straight-talking Aussie Postecoglou and his immediate impact on a squad that eventually spluttered to an eighth-place finish last term.

“Conte was just very honest. That’s probably what we we needed at the time,” said the ex-Swansea star, 30. “That’s what got us to Champions League football. I loved playing under him. I played a lot and was very happy.

“Ange has been a breath of fresh air. It’s just the values that he speaks of, what he expects on a day-to-day basis – just to be the best of you. It’s that personal side, the reasons why you play football, stripping it all back. It’s a good reminder for people to have the motivations why they play the game in the first place.

“It’s pretty intense but ultimately it’s the industry where we want to be. Trying to strip it back and be positive is the only way to go about it.”

That approach comes in handy when sitting on the bench, waiting for a chance to be involved in a winning unit. Davies, whose second league start this season came in the recent 2-1 reverse to Wolves, added: “It’s hard to be bitter when the team is winning. If I was manager, I wouldn’t change it either. “
