Kyle Flanagan is set to be reunited with his father and coach Shane after being offered a two-year deal to join the Dragons.

Flanagan, 24, played his last game for the Bulldogs against the Titans on Sunday and will be one of a host of players leaving Canterbury after their dismal season.

The poaching will give St George Illawarra greater depth at hooker – a position they’ve struggled with for a number of years – and help Shane Flanagan in the halves with captain Ben Hunt expected to spend further time on State of Origin duty.

The Dragons have already released Jayden Sullivan, who has signed a four-year deal at the Wests Tigers.

It will be Kyle Flanagan’s fourth NRL club after previous stints at the Roosters, Bulldogs and Sharks, where he made his debut under his father.

St George Illawarra are in the final stages of putting together the deal, which will mean the Flanagans will be the third father-son combination in the NRL with Ivan and Nathan Cleary at Penrith and Kevin and Billy Walters at Brisbane.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur’s son Jake only left the Eels mid-season for further opportunities at Manly.

Flanagan snr, who guided the Sharks to their maiden premiership in 2016, will return to NRL head coaching with the Dragons next year after previous assistant coaching stints at St George Illawarra and Manly.

He has already recruited Rabbitohs prop Hame Sele for next year and is also on the cusp of announcing the retention of back-rower Dan Russell, who made his debut for the club this year at 27.
