Perez’s father offers wild prediction as Mexican tipped to upset Max Verstappen
Antonio Perez, father of Sergio, has claimed that his son will partner Max Verstappen at Red Bull for the next ten years, predicting that Checo will get his hands on a World Drivers’ Championship trophy before his career comes to an end.
There were unsubstantiated rumours circulating ahead of this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix suggesting that Perez will call time on his F1 career at the end of this season, backing out of his Red Bull career a year ahead of schedule. However, both the Mexican and his father have now batted off these claims.
2023 has been an extremely testing year for Perez, who heads into his home race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez looking to cut down a 226-point deficit to his team-mate. The 33-year-old has failed to record a win since the fourth round of the campaign, while Verstappen has 15 to his name.
Antonio was full of enthusiasm when asked about his son’s future by ORF in Mexico. He explained: “Checo will definitely drive with Max in the same team for another ten years. And in these ten years, Checo might win a world championship.

Perez himself still believes in his dream of becoming a world champion, despite his struggles in 2023. The Mexican has been miles off the pace since the early stages of the season, but his wins in Jeddah and Baku prove that he has regular, race-winning potential within him.
Speaking about the chances of finishing second in the 2023 World Championship, he explained: “I want to achieve it with more victories this year, by finishing the season strong, and having great momentum to go into the winter – still believing that I can be champion in the future, which is the ultimate target.”
