F1 rookie narrowly escapes ‘biggest accident of his life’ in Abu Dhabi practice

F1 rookie Jack Doohan narrowly avoided the "biggest accident of his life" in practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Aussie, 20, took Esteban Ocon's Alpine seat for first practice of the final race weekend of the season on Friday (November 24). On one of his hot laps he came around the penultimate corner and was confronted by the Williams of Logan Sargeant on the racing line.

American Sargeant, 22, who finds himself bottom of the standings in his debut season, was completely unaware he was blocking the path of Doohan, who had to take swift evasive action to not drive into the back of him.

Reacting on the team radio, he exclaimed: "I almost had the biggest accident of my life!" An Alpine engineer responded: "Yeah we saw that."

"Oh my god man," added Doohan, clearly still processing the shock of the near-miss as he crawled over the start/finish line. "It's alright mate, don't worry," was the reassuring message from the garage.

The FIA announced the incident would be investigated for Sargeant's "erratic driving" by the stewards after the end of the session, which featured 10 young drivers.

All F1 teams are required to use a rookie in at least two practice sessions throughout the season, with all of them bar AlphaTauri leaving it to the last.
