World’s richest tennis player worth billions beats lingerie model at US Open

The world’s richest tennis player made short work of lingerie model Camila Giorgi at the US Open.

Jessica Pegula, whose family is worth a staggering £5billion, was too strong for Giorgi, who divides her time between tennis and modelling. American number one Pegula cruised through 6-2 6-2 to book a second round spot at Flushing Meadows.

Pegula’s father Terry is the owner of NFL side the Buffalo Bills and NHL outfit the Buffalo Sabres. He boasts a reported net worth of $6.7billion (around £5.4billion). That ranks him in the top 500 wealthiest people worldwide. Terry made his fortune in the oil and gas industry before moving into sports.

While Pegula can count on untold resources from her father, she has amassed a personal fortune of her own through prize money totalling more than £6m and is keen to carve her own path.

"I know that's maybe not the story people gravitate towards, right? They may think it's interesting. I know some people do, but, yeah, I'm aware of that and I know that," she said when discussing her father’s wealth last year.

"But I also think I have a lot of people's respect as well. I think it's kind of known at least on tour and with players that, yeah, I have that respect."

Meanwhile, Giorgi’s work away from tennis, which includes bikini and lingerie shoots, has netted her 729,000 followers on Instagram.

It wasn’t the first time the pair had faced each other at a Grand Slam. Earlier this year, they met at the French Open, Pegula prevailed on that occasion too, albeit after Giorgi retired hurt after just one set. That set also ended 6-2 in Pegula’s favour.
