Tour de France star in ‘critical condition’ after car crash with pregnant wife

Tour de France star Nathan van Hooydonck is in 'critical condition' after he was involved in an awful car crash on Tuesday morning.

Van Hooydonck, who finished racing the Tour of Britain on Sunday, was driving his car with his pregnant wife in Kalhmthout, near Antwerp, when he became unwell and inadvertently accelerated into traffic.

“A car with two occupants was waiting at the traffic lights at the intersection of Dorpsstraat and Kapelsesteenweg,” Patrick De Smedt, a police spokesman told Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

“The driver was resuscitated on site and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. His pregnant wife who was sitting next to him was not injured but was also taken to hospital for a check-up."

Jumbo-Visma said in a statement: "We can confirm that earlier today our rider Nathan van Hooydonck became unwell while driving his car, leading to his involvement in a traffic accident.

"He was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he is receiving good medical care. We cannot confirm rumours that his condition is critical. He is undergoing further medical examinations. Thank you all for your messages to Nathan and the team."

Van Hooydonck was a key member of Jumbo-Visma's Tour de France team this July – where he helped shepherd Jonas Vingegaard around France for his second overall victory in as many years.

He performed similar duties last week as team-mate Wout van Aert won the Tour of Britain, while his best individual result this season was his second place at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne back in February.

Van Hooydonck was down to race in the European Championships later this month for Belgium.
