Katie Boulter powered her way into the US Open second round with a blizzard of winners which showcased her progress this summer.
The 27 year-old from Leicestershire struck 31 of them as she comfortably overcame France’s Diane Parry 6-4 6-0 in just 82 minutes. She was awaiting the winner of the match between seventh seed Carolina Garcia and China’s Yafan Wang.
‘I had to stay with her and at the end I played some really good tennis there,’ she said after beating the world number 83. ‘I need to be playing these tournaments week in week out. Hopefully I have started everyone off well today.’
Watched by boyfriend Alex de Minaur, Boulter went into overdrive after a very competitive first set, and her ranking is now closing in on the top fifty. On this evidence she would look perfectly at home there due to her heavy ballstriking from the baseline.
Boulter, through to the second round for the first time here, was the first of six Brits due in action on the second day in New York, with Lily Miyazaki already in the second round.
