England bowler Chris Woakes withdraws from IPL in blow to Delhi Capitals

England bowler Chris Woakes has withdrawn from the upcoming Indian Premier League.

The 31-year-old was due to play for Delhi Capitals at the 2020 IPL after being signed for £160,000 at the auction in December.

But Woakes has decided to miss the tournament in a bid to keep himself fresh for the home summer, with Delhi now searching for an overseas replacement.

Woakes was a key member of the England squad that won the World Cup on home soil last summer, and played four of the five Ashes Tests and Joe Root’s side drew 2-2.

The seam bowler then toured New Zealand and South Africa and arrived in Sri Lanka with the rest of the England squad this week ahead of the two-Test series which starts on March 19.

The 2020 IPL begins on March 29 and runs for almost two months.

On Friday, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly was forced to allay fears that the IPL could be effected by the spread of coronavirus.

‘The IPL is very much on. Everywhere, tournaments are going on,’ India legend Ganguly told PTI.

‘England are already in Sri Lanka. South Africa are here. There are no issues.

‘County teams are travelling all over the world. They are travelling to Abu Dhabi, UAE to play. So there is no problem.

‘We will take all precautions. I don’t know exactly what the extra measures are. It’s only medical team which will tell us about that.

‘The medical team is already in touch with the hospitals so that everything is available. We will do what the doctors say. They are the professionals.’
