Ayr, Hereford, Chelmsford and Wolverhampton racing tips

CARDSHARP can give punters a pre-Cheltenham boost with a victory in the Listed Bombardier British Hopped Beer Lady Wulfruna Stakes (2.45) at Wolverhampton today.

The Mark Johnston trainee ran third in this race 12 months ago before going on to lift handicaps at Lingfield Park and York – the latter from a British Horseracing Authority rating of 107 – in the first half of the year.

My selection has been absent from the course since beating just one home behind Limato in the Group 2 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket last June.

But Cardsharp is the best horse in the race on BHA figures and it’s worth taking the chance that Adam Kirby’s mount is ready to fire after 252 days on the sidelines.

The Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap (2.10) is a good opportunity for TREACHEROUS to rack up a hat-trick.

After a sixth-place to Hart Stopper at Newcastle in January – his first start since the previous May – Ed de Giles’ six-year-old progressed to score at Kempton Park the following month, going in again under a 5lb penalty at the Sunbury course three days later.

There’s a further 4lb rise in the weights to deal with, but Treacherous, making his first visit to Dunstall Park, looks sure to give another good account.

At Ayr, THE CON MAN gets the vote to return to winning form in the Tennant’s Lager Handicap Hurdle (3.05).

At the end of January Donald McCain saddled the son of Oscar to hit the jackpot at Kelso, before The Con Man went off the 5-1 favourite for a big-money handicap hurdle at Ascot three weeks ago.

Brian Hughes’ mount came back in fifth behind Nordano, but this assignment is much less demanding and The Con Man shouldn't be written off.

Neither should THEFLICKERINGLIGHT, at the top of her game prior to a flop at Doncaster 53 days ago and primed to bounce back in the Heverlee Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (2.30).

The return to two miles should help CLAN LEGEND, whose consistency should receive its reward in the Tennent’s Light Handicap Chase (1.55).
