Wrexham sign deal with oil firm whose boss said she was "tired of minorities"
Wrexham have signed a new sponsorship deal with Lucas Oil – whose co-founder once said she was "sick and tired of minorities ruining our country".
The Welsh club, backed by celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, announced the American company as their new "oil partner" this week in a two-season deal which will see them sponsor the University End stand of the Racecourse Ground.
Charlotte Lucas, who founded Lucas Oil with her husband Forrest, hit the headlines in 2014 for a controversial Facebook post. She wrote: "I'm sick and tired of minorities running our country! As far as I'm concerned, I don't think that atheists (minority), muslims (minority) or any other minority group has the right to tell the majority of the people in the United States what they can and cannot do here. Is everyone so scared that they can't fight back for what is right or wrong with this country?"
She quickly deleted her comments and told ABC 6: "I was very upset when I wrote that. I will not elaborate other than to say that there are certain people who are trying to make the whole world eat what they want to eat and do what they want to do.
"I don't think it's any of their business what I put in my mouth. Thank you."
She later added: "I apologize to everyone for the insensitive comments posted on my Facebook account. My comments did not reflect my personal views about any individual or minority group, only my frustration that our government system sometimes seems out of balance.
"We live in a great country, but the agenda for our elected officials is too often dictated by special interest groups."
Mitigating any damage his wife may have done, Forrest also took out a full-page advert in their local paper, the Indianapolis Star, to further apologise.
Part of the message read: "Although it was not Charlotte's intent to offend anyone, her comments were harsh and insensitive. Her words were hurtful to many and disappointing to all."
Lucas Oil have previously sponsored the Anglesey Football League and teams in the Welsh Premier League, with their UK and European headquarters based in north Wales. Wrexham CEO Fleur Robinson said: “We are delighted to be welcoming another big-name international sponsor to the Football Club.
“Lucas Oil are a new partner of the Football Club, having not previously sponsored us, and join Macron and Wrexham Lager as stand sponsors at the Racecourse Ground. The Club’s stated commercial approach is to secure sponsors from an international, national and local base. As an international company, with a North Walian headquarters, they meet two of these criteria.
“We are all looking forward to hearing our passionate and vocal supporters backing the team from The Lucas Oil Stand from next season.”
