Turkey international Ahmet Yilmaz Calik dies in horror motorway crash aged 27

Turkish international footballer Ahmet Yilmaz Calik, 27, has died.

Calik was involved in a horror car crash on Tuesday morning, and it is believed that he lost control and crashed at around 9am local time.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, where it is understood that Calik's car was overturned after it came off the motorway.

However, the 27-year-old was declared dead at the scene.

His current club Konyaspor tweeted: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our football player Ahmet Calik, who has won the love of our fans and our city since the first day he came to our Konyaspor."

While Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu, the youth and sports minister for Turkey, said: "May God have mercy on the late Ahmet Çalık, who also served in our national team.

"My condolences to his family, Konyaspor and the entire football community.”

His former side Galatasaray added: "It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of our former football player Ahmet Çalık.

"May God have mercy on the deceased, we express our condolences to his grieving family, loved ones and Turkish sports community."

Calik spent his entire career in Turkey after progressing through the ranks of his local side Gençlerbirliği.

However, after impressing he earned himself a move to Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray.

It was at Galatasaray where Calik earned European caps with games in the Europa League qualifying, and he sat on the bench for Champions League fixtures.

But after failing to break into the squad, Calik moved to Konyaspor in 2020.

Calik's finest hour perhaps came in 2016, when he earned himself a spot in Turkey's squad for Euro 2016.

Although he failed to make an appearance at the table he went on to earn eight senior caps for the national side.
