Thomas Tuchel is interested in signing a number of Chelsea players after landing the Bayern Munich job including his former midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports. The German tactician is now back in coaching after replacing Julian Naglesmann in the Allianz Arena hot-seat and now he could be prepared to turn to his former club to bolster his squad when the summer transfer window opens.

Tuchel was relieved of his duties in west London back in September following a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia.

The 49-year-old Champions League winner has since taken an extended break from the game before returning to the Bundesliga where he will seek to wrestle back first place from Borussia Dortmund.

But beyond that, there is an appreciation that Bayern will have to get busy in the summer market if they want to maintain their superiority at the summit of German football.

With Dortmund continuously improving, they have now closed the gap on their rivals and could go four points clear of Bayern if they were to win this weekend’s Der Klassiker.

According to The Evening Standard, Tuchel is expected to launch moves for a number of his former Chelsea players at the end of the season.

It’s understood Kovacic is one of the key names of interest as he approaches the final 12 months of his current deal with Chelsea.

The Blues are yet to offer Kovacic an extension and there is now concern the Croatian maestro could be heading for the exit door.

Chelsea need to offload a number of players this summer to ensure they remain in compliance with FFP regulations and Kovacic is one of the players that could yet move on.

The ex-Real Madrid midfielder is believed to be highly-rated by his former head coach Tuchel while Manchester City are also admirers of the 28-year-old.

Kovacic, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic are part of a long list of Chelsea players who now have uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues could now be ruthless with their attempts to raise cash and given Kovacic and Mount are set to enter the final year of their contracts, they could be the first stars to be sold.

Graham Potter is a fan of Kovacic, however, and has recently handed him the captain’s armband in the absences of Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta.

While Bayern have not enjoyed the season they have hoped for under Nagelsmann, there is still optimism Tuchel can revive their campaign and turn it into one to remember.

Ex-Bayern midfielder Lothar Matthaus believes Tuchel has all the makings of a successful manager in Munich.

He said: “The new coach Thomas Tuchel is a good choice for me. He was already in conversation five years ago, but unfortunately it didn’t work out at the time.

“And now Tuchel is the new coach at FC Bayern. And he should get the full backing of those responsible.

“He can win the Champions League, he can win the DFB Cup and, above all, he can play Borussia Dortmund. He knows Borussia Dortmund and that’s why I think it’s the ideal solution after Julian Nagelsmann.”
