Trippier spotted ‘waving goodbye’ to Atletico fans as Newcastle transfer nears

Kieran Trippier was spotted 'waving goodbye' to the Atletico Madrid fans after their win on Sunday as his Newcastle United transfer nears its completion.

The England international has been strongly linked with a move to the Magpies since the Saudi-led takeover of the club was completed back in October.

It is now understood that he is close to becoming the club's first signing of the new era following the opening of the January transfer window.

Newcastle are reportedly in advanced talks with both Atletico and Trippier as they aim to complete the transfer in the coming days to boost their survival hopes.

Atletico fans now believe that Trippier has wished farewell to the club's supporters following their most recent match.

The Spanish champions beat Rayo Vallecano at home on Sunday and Trippier was seen applauding the fans after the match.

After hugging teammate Jan Oblak, Trippier made his way towards the crowd before waving as he headed towards the tunnel.

He was also the final Atletico player to leave the field at the Wanda Metropolitano following the match.

One Atletico fan page even tweeted: “His last game in the red and white?”

Trippier played the full 90 minutes as Atletico ran out 2-0 winners, but it is growing increasingly likely it will be his final game for the club.

Having moved ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign him, Newcastle are believed to be aiming to complete the deal as soon as possible.

The Red Devils had been strongly linked with Trippier having looked into signing during both of the last two transfer windows.

Trippier, who has 35 caps for England, moved to Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 and was a member of the side which won the La Liga title last season.

He has made a total of 86 appearances for the Spanish giants since and has also contributed an impressive 11 assists from full-back.

In addition to Trippier, Newcastle have been linked with a host of names already in January, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Barbosa.
