Sandro Tonali’s lawyers will reportedly travel to Rome on Monday in order to negotiate a plea bargain after the midfielder ‘admitted to gambling on football matches’.

The Newcastle star is one of three players that have been named in the investigation that is being undertaken by prosecutors, alongside Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo and Nicolo Fagioli of Juventus – who has since been banned for seven months.

It has been reported that Tonali, who joined Newcastle this summer for £52million, could face up to a year on the sidelines.

La Gazzetta dello Sport are now reporting that the midfielder’s lawyers will be in Rome on Monday in order to ‘negotiate a plea bargain’.

The report continues to say that Tonali ‘self-reported’ and was heard by the FIGC Prosecutor last week as he seeks help to treat a gambling addiction.

Tonali had reportedly gambled solely on AC Milan to win matches, a different scenario to his fellow Italian Fagioli.

Fagioli reported himself to FIGC as soon as the Turin Prosecutor put him under investigation earlier this year, but didn’t bet on his own side.

The Italian media outlet continue to state that ‘breach of Article 24 leads to a suspension of at least four years but Tonali, like Fagioli, aims to – at least- halve the ban’s length’.

The next step is for his lawyers to travel to Rome for a hearing with the FIGC Prosecutor on Monday in order to ‘discuss the length of his ban’.

It is believed that Newcastle and Tonali could find out the length he will be out for by the beginning of next week, once the hearing has taken place.

The Italian joined his Newcastle team-mates in a lap of honour after their 4-0 demolition of Crystal Palace.

After the match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that it was his idea as he wanted his player to ‘see the love closer up’ following the news.

’It sort of came to me when we were doing our walk that I wanted him to be at the front, to see the love closer up, he revealed. ‘So it’s a big thank you from me to our supporters. That reception at the end was incredible and it was emotional.

‘Sandro is going through an incredibly emotional time and the supporters reacted how I hoped they would. I could feel the love between him and them and that will do him the world of good, he’ll feel much better.’
