Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's overheard instruction to Marcus Rashford is damning to one Arsenal star.

The Red Devils went into half-time level at 0-0 against their London rivals after a cagey first half at the Emirates Stadium.

With Manchester City moving four points clear of their rivals, the manager knew that a first win against the Gunners in five games was the only option.

And his was heard telling Rashford to target Cedric Soares, who has been standing in for Kieran Tierney at left back.

ESPN reporter James Olley and the Independent's Miguel Delaney heard Solskjaer say to the forward: "Marcus, he cannot defend. He cannot defend. Take him on if you want."

The boss had come right to the edge of the technical area so he could yell the instruction to Rashford.

Cedric, who was signed permanently from Southampton over the summer after joining on loan last January, has started the last four Gunners games at left back.

But Solskjaer did not consider the impact of Gabriel Martinelli, who came into the starting XI for the injured Bukayo Saka.

Rashford had a chance on 28 minutes, having found space on the right side of the penalty box to receive Paul Pogba's cross.

Lining up to take a shot at Bernd Leno's goal, the Brazilian came sprinting in to head the ball away from the United No.10's grasp.

This earned high praise from Old Trafford legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

Speaking during commentary at the Emirates Stadium, the former defender said: "He's been noticeable for how much he's attended to his defensive duties.

"He's been doubling up with Cedric – and he needs his wide player."

A win for United would see them close the gap to City down to one point while three points for the Gunners would put them seventh in the Premier League table.
