Sevilla vs Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes explains row with Victor Lindelof during Europa League defeat

Bruno Fernandes shrugged off his row with Victor Lindelof after Manchester United’s devastating Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla.

Fernandes appeared to blame Lindelof for Luuk de Jong’s decisive late goal after the United centre-half lost Sevilla’s match-winner while defending a Jesus Navas cross.

Television cameras captured a heated exchange between the pair in the aftermath of the goal but Fernandes insisted there was no issue between him and his United team-mate.

“It is normal when you take a goal,” he said. “Everyone was mad. It was not about me or Victor.

“What happened is nothing, it was normal. It is about looking out for each other. It will happen in a lot more teams too.”

Solskjaer said that he wants his players to be accountable for errors or mistakes that they make but felt Lindelof was unfortunate to be caught out on the goal.

“It was a disappointing goal to give away. We were on a counter attack, Anthony [Martial] gets brought down. How [the Sevilla player’s] not booked, I don’t know.

“The ball keeps on playing, we work to keep it in, then we lose the ball. It’s a disapointing goal to concede and I want the players to be accountable and to put others to account.

“Then again, the cross got deflected so Brandon [Williams] is unlucky. Victor gets caught with the ball looping over him after that deflection. I think that a bit of frustration took the boys.”

Fernandes gave United the lead in Cologne with an ninth-minute penalty but Suso equalised for Sevilla shortly before the half-hour mark.

United had plenty of chances to restore their lead at the start of the second half but were brilliantly denied by Sevilla goalkeeper Bono.

De Jong’s goal came 12 minutes from time and consigned United to a third semi-final defeat of the season after also falling short in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
