Roy Keane recalls his reaction to Billy Gilmour’s performance against Liverpool
Roy Keane was so stunned by Chelsea kid Billy Gilmour's performance against Chelsea that he leapt out of his seat.
Gilmour shone in the Blue's 2-0 win over Liverpool as they progressed to the FA Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Jurgen Klopp's men.
The 18-year-old Scot has earned plenty of plaudits since his dazzling show, but perhaps none have been as hard-earned as Keane's.
"For his performance the other night I thought he was fantastic," the former Manchester United captain told Sky Sports.
"I was sitting at home with a cup of tea and a bit of chocolate in front of me and I didn't have the volume on.
"When the game started I got out of my seat, which I rarely do and I thought: 'Who is this kid?'
"There are certain traits you want from a midfielder, whether it's quality on the ball, football intelligence or composure.
"He had everything, it was one of the best performances I have seen in a long, long time.
"It was like a world class player. That's what he looked like straight away.
"I thought it was one of their experienced lads and then I kept a close eye on him for the rest of the game and everything he done just had quality written all over it.
"Obviously he's a small kid but he has a big composure about him and I can't wait to see him again today."
"The downside for the kid now is he has got to back it up."
Gilmour retained his place for Chelsea's Premier League clash at home to Everton this afternoon.
And he has been backed to knuckle down and ensure he has a bright future at Stamford Bridge.
"Knowing Billy, even at a young age he's a very determined young lad, he's very smart," said his manager Frank Lampard.
"He'll understand it was a very good game for him but that the hard work starts now.
"I think he should quite rightly enjoy the moment, and I'm delighted for him.
"But in terms of how I've seen him around the place, it's the same attitude, same training, same ethics, same quality; so all good."
