Rio Ferdinand slated over ‘disrespect’ to Sir Alex Ferguson on 80th birthday
Rio Ferdinand has been slammed for posting a bizarre happy birthday message to former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The legendary Old Trafford boss turned 80 today as fans and former players flooded social media with messages honouring the man and his accomplishments.
Among those was former Red Devils defender Ferdinand, who was signed by the Scot in 2002 and went on to win six Premier League titles and a Champions League under his tutelage.
And to mark the special occasion, Ferdinand posted a screenshot of Ferguson during one of their facetime calls with a strange filter and the two-time treble winner wearing a crown and beard.
Ferdinand captioned the post on Twitter: “Happy 80th birthday boss. The creator of a machine that enabled people to learn & become Winners,” along with a love heart.
But Ferdinand’s well-intentioned message has been deemed slightly distasteful by some fans due to the ex-manager’s highly respected standing in football.
One fan replied to Ferdinand on Twitter: “You remain a very weird man.”
Others pointed out that Ferguson would not have received the edit well, writing: “Rio if he sees this he’ll kill you.”
Another brutally added: “You are getting a clip around the ear next time he sees you.”

Ferguson was of an older generation known for commanding maximum respect from players.
The iconic boss was responsible for taking on the Man United job in the late-80s and turning the club into arguably the biggest side in world football, meanwhile dishing out his famous hairdryer treatment to players to maintain high standards.
Yet Ferdinand still enjoys a close relationship with his former boss and even bantered the Scot over Scotland’s 2-0 defeat to Czech Republic at Euro 2020.
Ferdinand said after the defeat: “Sir Alex Ferguson has been on my phone all morning. Let me see if I can text him back right now! I’m gonna text him now: ‘Are you okay boss?”
