Reece James is facing another ‘long’ spell on the sidelines to put his hopes of making England’s Euro 2024 squad in doubt.

Mail Sport revealed this morning that Chelsea captain James was scheduled to see a hamstring specialist on Tuesday to discover the extent of the hamstring injury suffered during the Blues’ 2-0 loss at Everton on Sunday.

And Chelsea have confirmed that James will be missing for a period after undergoing ‘medical assessment’.

Chelsea don’t want to put a timescale on how long his recovery might take, but there are fears the injury will rule James out for months than weeks.

Well placed sources are indicating he will be unavailable for a ‘long’ period – while an eventual operation to repair the damaged hamstring was not being ruled out on Monday night.

The defender has a history of hamstring problems, with that in mind there is an understanding his recovery will not be straight forward.

Having played in the opening game of the season against Liverpool, James missed two months of the campaign with his previous hamstring injury.

His latest setback not only arrives as a blow to Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino – but also England boss Gareth Southgate.

James ruled himself out of contention for Southgate’s last squad as he chose to focus on his fitness.

Southgate, after revealing James decision, warned there was not much time to impress before the European Championships next summer.
