Real Madrid and Barcelona Champions League spots ‘at risk’ due to Rubiales saga
Jude Bellingham tipped to succeed Real Madrid legend
The ramifications of Luis Rubiales’ controversial kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso could spill over into Spanish club football. Real Madrid and Barcelona face uncertainty regarding their Champions League spots due to a letter written by the Secretary General of the RFEF (Spanish FA) directly to UEFA.
A chaotic saga has unfolded since RFEF president Rubiales planted a kiss on Hermoso after Spain’s triumph at the Women’s World Cup. The midfielder claims that it was not consensual, and the Spanish football chief has faced widespread calls to resign.
Despite numerous senior RFEF figures taking Rubiales’ side, FIFA have suspended him from football-related activity for 90 days after he sensationally refused to step down during a press conference last week.
According to Onda Cera, RFEF secretary general Andreu Camps has now filed a letter to UEFA complaining about the Spanish government’s intervention in the Rubiales scandal.

UEFA regulations state that member associations should manage their affairs independently and without undue influence from third parties. Camps reportedly feels as though the government have interfered by calling on Rubiales to resign.
According to reports in Spain, a politician believes that Camps’ letter is written in the hope of UEFA threatening to expel the RFEF from competitions unless they are permitted to manage their affairs independently.

But if the Spanish government stand firm and UEFA not only issue the threat, but carry it out, Barca and Madrid could ultimately be thrown out of the Champions League. Los Blancos have won Europe’s top-tier club trophy twice as many times as any other club, while La Blaugrana have clinched the title on five occasions.
Such a ruling could also affect Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, who have also qualified for this year’s Champions League group stage. UEFA competitions include the Europa League and the Europa Conference League, meaning Villarreal, Real Betis and Osasuna would also be affected.
UEFA are yet to issue a formal statement on the scandal, with the governing body’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, said to be good friends with Rubiales.
The Spanish football chief’s mother locked herself in a church and declared a hunger strike on Monday morning due to the ‘inhumane’ treatment directed towards her son. Rubiales’ cousin, Vanessa Ruiz, has spoken out to offer support.
“Whoever spends five minutes with Luis knows that he is a beautiful person, with a very good heart,” she said. “If [Jenni Hermoso] felt harassed from the start, she would have gone where she had to go, not having changed the version three times.”
