Ranieri fumes with Mikel Arteta at full-time over controversial Arsenal goal

Claudio Ranieri was caught fuming on camera at Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta following Watford’s 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Watford were dominated by the Gunners throughout the 90 minutes but had a great chance at securing points due to sloppy finishing by the home side.

Arteta’s side had two goals disallowed and missed a penalty, meaning they could only score one against a struggling Watford on Sunday afternoon.

Talented youngster Emile Smith Rowe eventually grabbed the all-important goal with a well-placed finish from outside the area, but the lead up to his effort was deemed unfair and unsportsmanlike by Ranieri, who bitterly complained to the Arsenal manager at full-time.

Arsenal’s goal came following a throw-in which Watford players and staff claimed should have been played back to the away side.

Winger Ismaila Sarr had gone down, prompting Watford full-back Danny Rose to kick the ball into touch so he could receive treatment.

But with the Gunners desperately chasing three points, Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette played a throw-in back to his own team-mate as Watford’s defenders raised their arms in appeal.

Ranieri said after the match: "We put out the ball and everybody expected the Arsenal players to give back the ball. Sissoko and Rose said give the ball to us we put the ball out because there was an injured player. After this it was very strange.

“Sarr takes the ball and in my opinion there was a big foul and then nothing and then they scored a goal. Very strange. It’s ok that’s football and I’m very satisfied about our performance."

Eventually, a failed Arsenal cross found its way to Watford's Sarr, who was seemingly brought down unfairly by Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

With referee Kevin Friend refusing to stop play, Arsenal capitalised on a loose pass and went on to score, leaving the Italian manager fuming.

Speaking on his debate with Arteta, Ranieri added: "The relationship is very good. I told to him there isn’t respect when we put the ball out. Just this."

But Arsenal fans on social media have been left unconvinced that their side can be unsportsmanlike-like, suggesting Watford only kicked the ball out to waste time.

One supporter tweeted: “Yeah let’s not talk about how as soon as they played the ball out the player got up and looked completely fine. 3 points, mind the drop.”

Another added “Rose put it out of play because he had two Arsenal players pressing him. He kicked it out cause he was stuck in the corner.”

The win now moves Arsenal up to fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham but behind on goal-difference.

Arteta’s side next travel to Liverpool in two weeks’ time where they face a tough challenge in keeping their unbeaten run going.
