Sterling reached the milestone with a match-winning penalty against Wolves on Saturday having scored 82 for City and 18 for Liverpool.

After slotting the ball past Jose Sa, he wheeled away to celebrate his 100th top-flight goal

Sterling is the 32nd player to get into the 100-club with Alan Shearer topping the all-time list with 260 goals.

City boss Pep Guardiola added his own congratulations to a player who has struggled to find a regular first-team place this season having contributed to all of City’s previous trophies under the Spaniard.

‘At his age, 100 goals is a lot,’ said Guardiola. ‘Congratulations to him, and the team. Raheem has always been important but players have to understand the highs and lows in their career. I don’t have any excuses sometimes for players not being in the team but Raheem is always aggressive in attack and committed with his defensive work.’

Sterling grabbed the ball to reach his milestone despite missing his last three penalties.

Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Sterling after he reached the historic landmark on Saturday

Ederson reached a landmark of his own against Wolves, and hailed Sterling after the match

Guardiola said: ‘Riyad (Mahrez) is our best taker by far. Ilkay (Gundogan) is also good but he is struggling with his back and not played so well in the last two games.

‘They were both off the field and Raheem showed the personality to take it and score. This is a value I appreciate.’

Goalkeeper Ederson also kept his hundredth clean sheet in all competitions for City. He sent a message to Sterling hoping the England winger will stay at the club despite being worried about a lack of game time.

‘I’m very happy for him to reach 100. It was a great goal. He’s reaching his best performance for us. I hope he’ll continue to be important for us.’
