Pochettino sends clear message to Chelsea board after disappointing Everton loss
Mauricio Pochettino has instructed the Chelsea board to spend in the January transfer window. The Argentine says it is obvious improvement is needed to his squad following Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Everton.
Chelsea lost for a third time in four games at Goodison Park. Goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin gave Everton a third successive Premier League win.
Chelsea have now dropped to 12th in the table with just five wins from their opening 16 matches of the campaign. The visitors dominated possession and had the better of the chances in the first half.
However, they were unable to make it count in the final third. Doucoure opened the scoring in the 54th minute before Dobbin scored his first goal for Everton in stoppage time.
Chelsea spent over £400million on new signings in Pochettino’s first window in charge. It took their spending under owner Todd Boehly to over £1billion since he bought the club in May 2022.

But Pochettino insists the continued lack of ruthlessness in front of goal shows more improvement is needed in the upcoming window. Pochettino told the BBC: “Football is about scoring goals and we were not clinical in front of goal.
“I’m really, really disappointed. We didn’t get the point we deserved. I think we were better but we didn’t get what we wanted.
“This was a game to play and to win. It’s a problem we need to check. We need to analyse the reality. We need to talk and to try to improve in the next transfer market.”
Pochettino made four changes to the team that lost 2-1 at Manchester United in midweek. Reece James and Benoit Badiashile came into the backline in place of Levi Colwill and Thiago Silva.

Conor Gallagher also returned from suspension, with Armando Broja replacing Nicolas Jackson in attack. But Broja was unable to make the impact Pochettino would have wanted and was taken off with 23 minutes remaining.
Chelsea lost skipper James through injury in the first half. Pochettino has revealed it is another hamstring issue for the England international.
He said: “He felt something in his hamstring. It’s not so nice for him to suffer another injury. He is an important player.”
Chelsea host Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge next Saturday in what could be a crucial game for Pochettino. They then play host to Newcastle in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup the following Tuesday.
