Pierre Emerick Aubamayeng scored a sublime overhead kick against Ajax in the Europa League on Thursday evening to end a five-game goal drought and open up a debate.
Amine Harit received the ball out wide and drove into the box before chipping it over to the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker – who launched himself into the air and executed a sensational bicycle kick.
The goal saw the Marseille fans erupt, with the French side moving into the lead, 3-2 after 47 minutes. Aubamayeng went on score a stoppage time penalty to secure a hat-trick – having already found the back of the net for the first time after nine minutes.
However, it was the bicycle kick that got people talking. Many took to social media to say it was ‘better’ than Alejandro Garnacho’s sublime overhead kick against Everton last week.
Garnacho’s outrageous effort gave United a third-minute lead at Goodison Park amid vocal protests from the home fans about the Premier League’s decision to deduct the Toffees 10 points for breaching financial rules.

The youngster, 19, managed to get on the end of Diogo Dalot‘s cross and connect beautifully with the ball to send it flying into the top-right-hand corner of the goal – with many saying it was even better than Wayne Rooney’s effort for Man United in 2011.
So, with two quality overhead kicks in the space of two days, there was only one thing to do… debate it on Twitter, now known as X. Fans were divided in their opinion.
One fan wrote: ‘I’m sorry but that’s got to better than Garnacho’s’. While another said: ‘Aubamayeng knocking Garnacho off the top spot with this one’.
However, some were favouring Garnacho’s strike, saying: ‘That’s not true. Garnacho got the best bicycle kick.’ Another added: ‘It’s just not though, Is it?’.
One social media user wrote: ‘In terms of the angle the goal is scored from, Garnacho has the edge…’
While one fan joked: ‘Clearly those saying Aubamayeng’s effort was as good as Garnacho’s are Arsenal fans’.
Aubamayeng won’t be too fussed about who’s goal was better, he will have just been happy to have found the back of the net after struggling to score over the course of Marseille last five games.
The hat-trick hero will be hoping to build on his performance when Marseille take on Rennes on Sunday evening at home in Ligue 1.
