Pep insists Man City will continue to buy right players – not ‘trophy’ signings

Pep Guardiola has claimed it’s more important to spend money on the right players than make “trophy” signings.

Manchester City don’t have a player in the top-20 list of the world’s most-expensive signings despite being the Premier League’s top overall spenders over the last five years.

Manchester derby rivals United have spent more on individual signings than City with Paul Pogba (£89million), Harry Maguire (£80m) and Romelu Lukaku (£75m) costing more than any of Guardiola’s stars.

City’s most-expensive player is midfielder Rodri, signed for £63m from Atletico Madrid last summer – 23rd in the all-time list of most-expensive players.

And Guardiola isn’t sure if and when City will spend £80 or £100m on one star.

He said: “I don’t know, it’s up to the club. When it comes to expensive players we are ranking 23 and 24 but the club has a bad reputation on that.

“They say, ‘That’s just Man City spending money’ but, of course it is not true. You just have to see the numbers.
