Owen reveals the one 'special' thing that's shocked him about Billy Gilmour
Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen admits he’s shocked at the ease in which Billy Gilmour has settled into Chelsea’s starting XI and says it takes a ‘special’ type of character to do so.
The teenager was named Man of the Match after a sensational display against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Wednesday and was rewarded with another start against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
Chelsea put together one of their best performances of the season by dismantling the Toffees in a 4-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Mason Mount, Pedro, Willian and Olivier Giroud.
But it was Gilmour that once again earned the plaudits and Owen admits he’s been astonished at the teenager’s self-confidence.
‘It’s all about character isn’t it? if you can come into the team and feel part of it straight away then that’s what it’s all about,’ Owen told Premier League Productions.
‘A lot of these players have got the talent and they need the chance but sometimes they’re so overawed of playing with their heroes because they’ve been dreaming of playing with some of these for years and years.
‘All of a sudden you’re telling them to give you the ball but that’s not as easy as it would seem. It takes a certain type of character to just come into the team and look as if he’s been there for years and he certainly has.’
Gilmour is likely to keep his place as the Blues travel to Villa Park next weekend and the victory against Everton has eased Chelsea’s top four concerns.
Wolves and Spurs both slipped up this weekend, while rivals Manchester United are taking on Manchester City at Old Trafford.
