Newcastle star given 4/10 as harsh L’Equipe player ratings rub salt into wounds
French newspaper L’Equipe have released their player ratings for Newcastle’s heartbreaking 1-1 draw with PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday night – and there are a fair few picks that are causing a stir. The national publication, known for its harsh ratings, only gave two players on the pitch a grade above six while one Newcastle starlet received a four.
Eddie Howe’s side looked to be en route to another famous victory against the French giants after leading for over 70 minutes courtesy of an Alexander Isak brace but Kylian Mbappe’s last-gasp equaliser from the spot ensured the points would be shared.
The draw means PSG stay two points clear of the Magpies in Group F with one game to go. Newcastle must now go and beat AC Milan at St James’ Park and hope that PSG drop points to Borussia Dortmund away from home in order to qualify for the knockout stages.
The Magpies were undoubtedly the better team throughout but despite their impressive showing, L’Equipe only Nick Pope (eight) and Bruno Guimaraes (seven) received high marks. Meanwhile, 17-year-old wonderkid Lewis Miley was given a four for a coming-of-age performance in Newcastle’s midfield.
Alexander Isak got a five despite scoring the opener, the same grade as Anthony Gordon, Jamal Lascelles and Tino Livramento while sixes were given out to Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Magpies boss Howe.
The best rating a PSG player received was a six, awarded to the Parisians’ wingers Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele. Lucas Hernandez and Fabian Ruiz followed closely with fives while four was the average rating for PSG’s starting XI with Randal Kolo Muani, Lee Kang-in, Manuel Ugarte, Danilo Pereira, Milan Skiniar and Achraf Hakimi all being deemed unsatisfactory.

Italian shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma was the only player to receive a shocking three out of ten player rating for his performance between the sticks but manager Luis Enrique was branded with the same mark as well. L’Equipe’s ratings have caused uproar online as they did the last time the two teams met in October when Newcastle steam-rolled PSG 4-1.
Despite pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the season, Newcastle’s players received an average rating of six from the French newspaper which didn’t go down too well with the Geordies.
