Newcastle United’s new Saudi Arabian ownership are reportedly clashing over whether to make Frank Lampard their next manager. Steve Bruce is coming under increasing pressure and is expected to be sacked following Sunday’s visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

With the Magpies sent to go on a massive recruitment drive over upcoming transfer windows, it is unlikely that Bruce will be the man to oversee the transformation.

It was thought that Bruce would not survive to take charge of his 1000th game as a manger, though the plans of the new regime appear to have changed.

Instead, it seems they are now making plans to wait until they have a definite replacement before letting Bruce go.

A number of high-profile managers have been linked with the job of turning Newcastle from relegation candidates into trophy contenders.

Lampard is certainly one of those on the shortlist, with the Englishman still out of job after being sacked by Chelsea in January.

The former Blues midfielder had made a solid start to life as a manager, guiding Derby County to the Championship play-off final before leading Chelsea to the FA Cup final.

But after a summer recruitment drive which saw Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva arrive at Stamford Bridge, Lampard struggled to get his side to gel.

That ultimately saw him sacked in January, with the Englishman yet to return to management, despite being linked with several jobs.

According to The Telegraph, Lampard is one of the names on Newcastle’s shortlist to replace Bruce at St James’ Park.

However, while his name is “being pushed by some” members of Newcastle’s new ownership group, there are those who are “wary”.

That has created an early clash within the group within the first week of their takeover from Mike Ashley.

Despite the clash, Lampard remains on what is said to be a five-man shortlist to become Bruce’s replacement.

Joining him on that list is Antonio Conte, Steven Gerrard and Eddie Howe, with former Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre “of interest”.

Two managers who have ruled themselves out though are Brendan Rodgers and Rafa Benitez, with both happy at current clubs Leicester City and Everton.

Lampard will certainly be high up the shortlist, with the advantage of being out of work, though money will not be a problem for Newcastle’s PIF ownership.

Despite his problems in his second season at Chelsea, Newcastle could be the prime place for him to resurrect his managerial career.

It now remains to be seen whether or not he can overcome the doubts among Newcastle’s ownership to become Bruce’s replacement.
