Newcastle are reportedly readying a huge off for Darwin Nunez as their desperate search for a new striker continues. The Magpies have been linked with numerous forwards since Callum Wilson was forced off through injury in the draw with Manchester United.

Eddie Howe is understood to be close to sealing a move for Burnley star Chris Wood, but they are exploring other options in addition to the New Zealander.

Newcastle remain in a perilous position despite their takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund earlier this season.

Howe has won just one game since he replaced Steve Bruce as manager, which is also Newcastle’s solitary victory in the Premier League this season.

That has left them second-bottom of the top-flight, in what increasingly appears to be a four-way battle for the final survival place.

They suffered a serious blow to their hopes of beating Burnley, Watford and Norwich to safety when Wilson limped off the St James’ Park pitch against United.

The Englishman has now been ruled out for as many as eight weeks, prompting a desperate search for firepower.

That search has led them to Nunez, who has starred for Benfica and attracted interest from Manchester City among others.

Nunez has scored 18 goals in 23 games in all competitions this season, including a brace in Benfica’s Champions League win over Barcelona.

That form has also attracted the interest of Newcastle, with Nunez’s goal return appearing to be especially attractive.

But the 22-year-old still has more than three years left to run on his current contract, meaning Benfica can demand a large fee.

According to O Jogo, Newcastle have taken that fact in mind and are preparing a huge £50m offer for the striker.

While it is stated that the Magpies are ‘tightening’ their grip on Nunez, they are facing an obstacle to completing the deal.

The Portuguese paper report that even the £50m is not yet enough to ‘satisfy’ Benfica, who are keen to keep hold of the Uruguayan.

Instead, they would prefer to hold onto Nunez until the end of the season, when more lucrative offers may be available.

It is stated that Benfica are expecting Atletico Madrid to make a move for Nunez, potentially after selling flop Joao Felix.

Such a sale will not take place until the summer, with Benfica happy to wait for the reigning La Liga champions to raise funds.

As a result, Newcastle may need to substantially increase their already high offer for Nunez if they are to sign him this month.
