Newcastle have suffered a setback in their quest for Premier League safety after learning that Callum Wilson could be missing for months due to the injury he picked up against Manchester United on Monday. But the Magpies might have the perfect replacement to help lift them out of the relegation zone.

Boss Eddie Howe confirmed that Wilson could be out for “weeks, maybe months” after he was withdrawn during the 1-1 draw on Monday.

Winger Allan Saint-Maximin was also taken off but his issue is not understood to be a major problem.

“Callum’s injury looks severe, weeks maybe months,” Howe said afterwards.

“I feared for him when he went down with nobody around him. A pull. Allan, I don’t think is as serious.

“We are thin on the ground in terms of bodies.”

Wilson will be a big miss for Newcastle. The striker has been one of the brighter parts of their disappointing first half of the 2021-22 campaign.

He has scored six Premier League goals and scored the first of the Saudi-backed owners’ tenure.

Saint-Maximin is the club’s next top scorer with four, while nobody else in the Newcastle squad has scored more than once.

While defensive reinforcements in January might be the priority, with the Tyneside outfit having already conceded a whopping 42 goals this term, attention might also turn to a striker.

And there could be no better option than Manchester City icon Edin Dzeko.

The Bosnian has continued to enjoy a prolific career since leaving City in 2016. Dzeko scored 72 goals for the English side before joining Roma.

Now at Inter Milan, Dzeko is on course to win Serie A this season but could be tempted away. He has just 18 months on his contract.

The 35-year-old has scored eight league goals in Italy this term having made the switch from Roma in the summer.

Dzeko would add reliability to Howe’s options. He has scored frequently for every club across his career and would ensure that Newcastle do not miss Wilson.

In the long term, the goalscoring burden would be withdrawn from Wilson’s shoulders. Dzeko’s age would mean that he would not expect to play every week, leaving the England striker to go straight back into the team.

Given their riches, the Magpies would have no financial issue prising Dzeko away from Inter. Following October’s £305million takeover, director Amanda Staveley promised that ‘world-class’ signings would be made.

Signing Dzeko to ensure goals are still scored in Wilson’s absence would be the perfect way to start.
