Fulham fans have berated Aleksandr Mitrovic after his penalty howler during their loss away to Newcastle.

The Serbian striker was left red-faced after he stepped up to take a penalty that would have put his side 1-0 up away at St James' Park. Despite slipping and putting the ball in the back of the net, the former Newcastle forward was found to have hit the ball twice in a blunder that saw his goal ruled out.

To rub salt into the wound, Newcastle managed to score an 89th-minute winner when Isak nodded home from close range, with the 28-year-old expected to avoid Match of the Day tonight. fans were unforgiving when they took to social media to share their fury.

@JuanG_Arango couldn't believe his eyes. He tweeted: "That Mitrovic pen… this game is more unbelievable by the second."

The unbelievable error from the experienced striker means Fulham's strong defensive display was left unrewarded as Fulham were unable to build on their 2-1 win over West London rivals Chelsea on Thursday.

Speaking after the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe insisted he didn't see Mitrovic's scarcely believable double touch. "Certainly a crazy second half. A lot happened in it," he told Sky Sports.

"I thought the first challenge could have been a penalty. That wasn't given. The second one I didn’t think was but was bizarrely given. The double touch I couldn’t see, but I was really pleased to see it go that way."
