Manchester United are believed to be interested in a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Thomas Meunier but the Belgian international will only consider the club’s offer if Barcelona do not come calling. AC Milan, Juventus and two unnamed London clubs are also believed to be in the race for his signature but the Belgian’s priority is the La Liga leaders.

Meunier has played for Dortmund since 2020 after joining the club on a free transfer from PSG. He is a regular in the Belgian international team and played in all three matches at the World Cup before the country’s surprise elimination in the group stages.

His contract at the Bundesliga club expires in 2024 and there is not yet any indication that he is likely to extend his stay. As a result, he could be available on a cut-price deal this summer as Dortmund seek to avoid losing him for nothing the following year.

Mundo Deportivo reports that United are one of the clubs chasing Meunier’s signature but the defender will only consider a move to the club if Barcelona do not solidify their interest. The Red Devils are on the lookout for reinforcements on the right-hand side of the defence with Erik ten Hag seeking high-quality competition for Diogo Dalot given concerns over Aaron Wan Bissaka’s ability.

However, the Catalan giants look to be in pole position having been in contact with the 31-year-old’s agent and are his first choice with their chances of signing him resting on their financial situation. He is also said to have spoke to the Blaugrana last winter but was unhappy with the money they were offering at the time so it remains to be seen if they have been able to improve their proposal.

AC Milan, Juventus and two unnamed London clubs are also believed to be in the running with it looking increasingly clear his long-term future will lie away from the Bundesliga.

Both United and Barcelona were reportedly had tabs on Meunier over the summer but were not to make a move for the player given Dortmund’s reluctance to lose him.

“Both Barcelona and Manchester United were interested in Thomas Meunier last August but there was no chance to agree on deal with Borussia Dortmund,” transfer guru Fabrizio Romano told CaughtOffside. “The problem was not on player’s side but on club’s side, as BVB wanted to keep him.”

It remains to be seen what Meunier’s next club will be as the race for his services intensifies.
