Meet Zidane Iqbal – Man Utd’s Iraq U23s wonderkid to feature against Young Boys

New interim manager Ralf Rangnick could be set to give youth a chance as Manchester United take on Young Boys in their final group stage match of the Champions League.

18-year-old Zidane Iqbal is in line to make his first senior appearance for the Red Devils after impressing academy bosses with six goals in 14 matches in the Premier League 2 last season.

The youngster joined the ranks at United when he was just nine years old, the earliest age at which someone is permitted to join an academy.

Since then he has impressed at every youth level, spending just shy of a decade in the set-up at Carrington.

Iqbal has also performed admirably at international level.

Having received his first call-up to the Iraq U23s side in September, the whizzkid was named captain and scored the opening goal in a 2-2 draw with Lebanon in October.

Such was his progress, Iqbal was handed his first professional deal back in April and promoted to Man Utd's under-23 squad alongside fellow wonderkids Shola Shoretire, Anthony Elanga and Hannibal Mejbri.

Now Iqbal is looking to emulate the trio by making his first appearance for the Red Devils' senior team and that could be tonight.

The Manchester Evening News reports Zidane Iqbal is in contention to make his debut for the Red Devils on Wednesday evening against Young Boys.

United have already qualified for the knockout stages after exacting revenge over Europa League winners Villarreal in their previous fixture.

A 2-0 win on the Spanish coast was enough for stand-in manager Michael Carrick to record his first victory and send Man Utd through to the last 16 of the competition as group winners.
