After making his return to sport with late summer loan to Getafe, Mason Greenwood will also make his on-screen return after it was confirmed the forward will be in this year's edition of Football Manager.

Greenwood, 21, was omitted from the most recent version of the game after he was suspended by Manchester United following his arrest in January 2022. He was later charged with attempted rape, coercive control and assault causing actual bodily harm on a female victim, only to see all charges dropped in February of this year.

The player has since been sent to Spain for the 2023/24 season after United concluded their own internal investigation into the accusations. Though technically still a United player – whose loan can be cut short should the Premier League giants wish – it's widely understood Greenwood will not play for United again.

However, he will see game time for the first time in more than 18 months after landing a temporary move to Madrid. And he'll also be back on virtual screens after Sports Interactive – the game's production company – confirmed his comeback.

Football Manager 2024 is expected to be released in November 2024, giving which is one month later than the previous edition of the video game favourite hit shelves. Greenwood's return to football has been one of the sport's most divisive issues in recent time, with many aggrieved to see the one-cap England international celebrated by his new fan base in Spain.

Getafe recently posted footage of the forward's first training session in their colours, with throngs turning out at the club's base to get a first glimpse at the loanee. Children cheered his entrance and beamed as Greenwood posed for selfies, suggesting many in attendance either aren't aware of the accusations surrounding him or have forgiven his alleged offences.

The United academy graduate was once heralded as a generational talent and a future star of Old Trafford. However, any future in football now looks destined to take shape away from the Theatre of Dreams.

Following his arrest and subsequent charges, Greenwood was also removed from the last edition of FIFA. Set to make its rebranded debut as EA Sports FC this year, EA Sports told The Athletic it would provide an update 'in due course' as to whether players could expect to see him back in their player pool, too.

Greenwood will have to wait before he can expect to make his first appearance in Getafe blue, with La Liga currently on hold during the international break.
