Ten Hag insists Man Utd have plenty to play for after European exit
Graham Potter wouldn’t deserve the opportunity to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager if Sir Jim Ratcliffe sacks the Dutchman, according to Gabby Agbonlahor. The ex-Premier League striker has urged United to target an alternative candidate with whom Potter will be all too familiar.
Ten Hag’s position is under intense scrutiny after United’s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday confirmed their Champions League group-stage elimination.
The Red Devils accumulated four points to finish bottom of Group A behind Bayern, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, the club’s worst-ever Champions League campaign.
Ten Hag has overseen defeats in half of United’s 24 games in all competitions this season, with a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on the horizon.
The Sun report Sir Jim’s £1.3billion deal to buy a 25 per cent stake in United is set to go through next week, allowing him to immediately take control of sporting decisions.
And it’s claimed that the 71-year-old has already met Potter over potentially replacing Ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
The former Chelsea boss is said to be Sir Jim’s preferred candidate should he sack Ten Hag as one of his first major decisions on the United board.

However, after his disastrous tenure at Chelsea last season, Agbonlahor isn’t convinced that Potter would be a good option.
The 48-year-old lasted just seven months at Stamford Bridge, losing 11 of his 31 games in charge and achieving the lowest points-per-game return of any manager in Chelsea’s history.
“He [Potter] failed at Chelsea. He doesn’t deserve his next club after failing at Chelsea to be Manchester United. What does that say about Manchester United?” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.
Agbonlahor instead believes United should attempt to lure Roberto De Zerbi away from Brighton and Hove Albion if they make a managerial change in the coming weeks.

He added: “I understand what you’re saying, but they should go for someone and say, ‘You know what, Brighton, how much for [Roberto] De Zerbi? We’re going to go and get him’.
“Villa did that with Unai Emery. They went and said how much compensation, went and paid it and got him out of there. That’s what big clubs do.”
Potter is familiar with De Zerbi, considering the 44-year-old Italian replaced him at the Amex Stadium after he departed for west London.
But he will be the more attainable of the two if United come knocking once the Sir Jim and INEOS era commences in M16.
