The influence that the Manchester United dressing room have over key decisions only appears to be growing as their season threatens to spiral. Senior players are understood to have made it known to club chiefs that the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was no longer working.

Solskjaer was sacked following the embarrassing defeat to Watford last Saturday, with United stating that they hoped to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.

When they get to the summer, the Red Devils will then attempt to bring in a new manager for the long-term.

A range of candidates for both jobs are being considered, with former Barca boss Ernesto Valverde reportedly in talks about taking over for the rest of the campaign.

Whether a successful stint as the interim will earn him the job on a full-time basis or not is unknown.

The current favourites for the long-term role are Mauricio Pochettino, Erik Ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers.

Pochettino would appear to be a very popular choice among some senior United players if he were appointed.

According to the Daily Star, Pochettino would be the preferred candidate of captain Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

It is stated that the Red Devils trio view the Argentine as the ‘long-term solution’ to the question of who takes charge.

They also believe that Pochettino can be the man to return United to their former status as the ‘most powerful force’ in England and in Europe.

Pochettino himself is thought to be keen to take charge at Old Trafford, with his reign as Paris Saint-Germain boss not working out as hoped.

The former Spurs manager is understood to be unhappy in the French capital, as he struggles to deal with the egos of superstars Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

He is reportedly ready to leave the Parc des Princes immediately to replace Solskjaer at United, but the Red Devils are reported to have seen their first bid for him rejected.

According to the Star, the United players have urged club chiefs to act ‘decisively and fast’ in moving for Pochettino to save their season.

Pochettino is not the preferred candidate of everyone in the United dressing room though, with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo eyeing a different boss.

The Star report that Ronaldo would like to see Zinedine Zidane come in as manager, after enjoying success under him at Real Madrid.

The Portuguese attacker is said to have told those willing to listen to him that Zidane is a proven winner.

It appears unlikely that an appointment, be it interim or more long-term, will be made before Sunday’s trip to Chelsea, with caretaker boss Michael Carrick set to again lead the team.
