Man Utd target US midfielder, Rudiger eyed and Carrick set for first manager job

It's no secret that Manchester United want to sign a defensive midfielder once the January transfer window opens next month.

The position proved a problem area for previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and new boss Ralf Rangnick will want to find a solution as quickly as possible.

That indicates there could be one or more midfielders arriving at Old Trafford early in the new year and the club have been linked with a host of names.

The latest is a US men's national team midfielder who has previously played under Rangnick's leadership at New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig.

Elsewhere they are being linked with a move for Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger while recently departed coach Michael Carrick is being lined up for his first job as manager.

Daily Star Sport has taken a look at the latest Manchester United transfer news below.

Carrick on managerial shortlist

Michael Carrick is said to be on the managerial shortlist to become the next boss at Preston North End, it is reported.

Frankie McAvoy left the club on Monday after nine months in charge and according to The Sun, Carrick is one of the top candidates to land the role

Having stepped into the breach when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, the former United midfielder temporarily took charge before Ralf Rangnick accepted the job offer.

Carrick hinted he would like to spend some time with his family after leaving his role at United, but could instead be in for a quick return to football.

Rudiger eyed

Manchester United could move for Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger, according to reports.

The Germany international will be out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted interest from some of the top clubs from across Europe.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur have all reportedly shown interest in the defender and United are now said to have joined the chase, according to The Independent.

But United's chances appear slim, with the report adding that Rudiger himself "would prefer to move abroad if new terms cannot be agreed with Chelsea".

US midfielder targeted

The Red Devils could target RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams, it has been claimed.

New United boss Ralf Rangnick knows the midfielder well, and previously likened him to Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich.

The midfielder has just been listed as the seventh most valuable players aged under 23 in Europe by the CIES Football Observatory with the Manchester Evening News reporting Rangnick is "unlikely to have forgotten about him".

Signing the US men's national team captain would also tick a box for "the Glazers and United's commercial arm", the report adds.
